- Laurel, MD, in the middle of the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan
- area is far from rural but its rescue squad still uses 33.020 MHz.
- And it has to have PL since it shares the channel with Fairfax
- Public Works across the Potomac.
-
- The more general answer is that the 30-50MHz range is the
- "low-band" land mobile radio (LMR) band. It is used by fire,
- rescue, police, construction, power companies, etc...

- This story reminds me back when I first became a Ham.
- But the only difference is that I had only had my License in about 1 week
- using a borrowed HT from a Fellow ham (both of us belong to the Local Rescue
- Squad). I was out for a walk with my Landlords wife and daughter talking
- to whom ever we went back to their house and was setting on the porch
- when another Ham mobile started calling for help reporting a very severe
- auto accident on I-64 just 5 miles west of my home. With me being a
- E-911 dispatcher anyway the call was handled professionaly but I still
- was shaken up over the entire mess. We had a major rock slide
- and a loaded tractor trailer colided with the rocks and Ky State Police
- Officer hit both the rocks and the truck both drivers were very seriously
- injured and are now back to work.
-
- Licensed or not, if the call for help you make over the airwaves
- makes a better chance for someone to live in a life threatening situation
- I'll be damn if I'm going to say something bad about it. You might be
- reporting the accident that My Family or myself is involved in..

-
- The institutional response of the matter being a "League personnel matter"
- does not hold water. It would if ARRL were a private, for profit firm. But
- in fact is it supposedly a non profit, with a board elected by the membership,
- and the League makes a big point of being responsive to, and attentive to,
- the membership and its concerns. Precisely because it is a membership service
- organization, and concommitantly because Luck was an important person in
- field service, the League does all, including itself, a disservice by
- "toughing the issue" in this way.
-
- I don't know Luck personally but have spoken with him on occasion and
- know that he has worked very hard over the years. This is not the way to
- reward a hard working employee; a rule of reason should apply where
- bureaucratic rules are instituted. Somewhere along the line the Managers
- and bureaucrats have forgotten what the primary reason is for the existence
- of the organization itself!
-
- I worked in public broadcasting for nine years and resigned two years ago
- because I witnessed much internal mismanagement and based on my own
- experience and the various correspondence I've read re. the Luck Hurder
- matter, I really think ARRL has let a bad tactical employee relations
- decision snowball into a strategically indefensible position.

- Is there a good, UHF only HT out there that can be modified to transmit and
- receive up to 470MHz? I don't mind retuning and losing the part or all of the
- 70cm band. I've checked the mods servers and there seems to be very little
- interest in the UHF siblings of the current crop of 2m HT's. I'm not
- interested in dual band units. Anyone out there experienced with the Yaesu
- FT-73? I need an easily tunable unit for testing UHF GMRS repeaters and I am
- aware of the type acceptance problems if used on the air. I'm also aware of
- the type accepted units on the market that are very expensive and awkward to
- program. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

- Having someone babysit seems more than a little bit like overkill.
- It is absolutely trivial to confirm the source IP address of

- Rather than trying to find out what makes this sort of individual tick, do a
- little judicious radio direction finding. Once you have tracked down the
- location of the individual causing the interference, you can then decide what
- steps should be taken. If it turns out that it is someone that is well known
- on the repeater, a simple phone call might work wonders. If no one knows the
- individual or their phone number then other action might be appropriate, such
- as documenting the interference and notifying the proper authorities. I would
- not recommend face to face confrontations or retaliations... :) Good luck.
